history of dogs in doha

Dogs in Doha was started by Birgit Marquerithe, a long time resident of the Middle East, originally from the Netherlands. Birgit rescued her first stray, Tommy, in 1999 when she moved to Qatar, a six week old kitten. Tommy was the first of a string of many rescues!

Most were successfully rehomed and with a lucky eight moving with Birgit wherever life took her. Birgit is now the proud owner of one cat and eight rescue dogs; Jerry, Seya, DD, Tinus (R.I.P), Ella, Mila, Lola and Luna. She swears that every day her pets show her how grateful, happy and content they are and she gains much pride in giving them a forever home.

Birgit started Dogs in Doha, a network of foster families and a pet owner support group, at a time when there was a real need for it in Qatar. Her main aim continues to be, educating others on animal welfare issues. Even though Birgit has moved onto another one of life's adventures with her brood, she continues to support Dogs in Doha fully and works with local volunteers to help run the program and coordinate fundraising events. The group's main aim is to work with foster families to help rehabilitate rescues and connect them with loving forever homes.

Birgit would adopt every single stray animal if she could. She can't, but she can do her part as we all can to help every 'unwanted' animal on the streets find a home where they are forever loved and content.
